Five Films that Inspire Travel

Travel is a huge passion for me but unfortunately with work, I'm limited on the time available to me. When I'm home, I love watching films and dreaming of the next big trip. Here are my top five films that have inspired me to travel:

1 Seven Years in Tibet (1997)

The true story of Heinrich Harrer's prisoner of war escape across the Himalaya into Tibet. The film has wonderful vistas and gives some insight into this mystical land while it was closed to foreigners. Heinrich Harrer was a true pioneer in the mountains and part of the first successful attempt on the north face of The Eiger. Need inspiration for that trek? Try this movie!

2 The Beach (2000)

Set in Thailand, Richard learns of a secret lagoon and beach on a distant Thai island while backpacking in Bangkok. He goes on to discover much more than a perfect paradise. Perfect for inspiring a trip to south east Asia.

3 Wild (2014)

Another to inspire a love of the outdoors (did I mention I love the outdoors?). This is the journey of a woman on the 1,100 mile trek on the Pacific Crest Trail. A fantastic demonstration of the beauty and variety that can be found in the USA outside it's populous cities.

4 Lost in Translation (2003)

Two people form a common bond in the alien city of Tokyo. If you are looking for something very different to a city break in the West, this film demonstrates the kookiness of Japan. The bustling streets, wacky nightlife and beautiful shrines are all here to inspire a trip to this eastern metropolis. Who doesn’t love Bill Murray either?

5 The Darjeeling Limited (2007)

Three brothers travel across India by train to find their mother. This film by Wes Anderson is fun and tragic but most importantly it combines two travel greats. Rail and India! Trains are the backbone of India and a common way to move across this huge country. The film captures the romance of this type of travel along with the wonderful Indian culture.
